When the Economy gets Tough, the Tough get Going: Starting their own Business.

The slow economy has caused a lot of people to lose their jobs and businesses to fail. It has also pushed many people to go out on their own. Starting a business in a down economy is tough, but the rewards can be well worth it.

Virginia Beach, Virginia - August 2, 2009

Hundreds of businesses are struggling to keep their doors open. Very well-known companies like Circuit City and Sharper Image have shut down because no one wanted to buy them. A large number of top rated businesses like Sears, Macy’s, Starbucks, General Motors and Waldenbooks are cutting locations and factories all across America. The government is helping banks and car manufacturers stay afloat with loans and buy-outs. It is pretty safe to say that the times are tough right now. But there is another phenomenon that slow economic conditions also produce. Some crazy people go out on their own and start a business.

Microsoft Corporation was started on the 15th of September 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen when they created the first version of MICROSOFT BASIC for the MITS Altair; the first personal computer. In this year, The City of New York ran into budget shortfalls and became severely over-extended. Their financial crisis got so bad that President Ford had to sign the New York City Seasonal Financing Act, which released $2.3 billion in loans to the city. The government continued to issue loan guarantees and direct loans to support the fiscally-troubled city until 1986. All the loans, loan premiums and fees have been repaid since that time and of course New York city has been fine since then. Microsoft has gone on to become one of the most successful companies in history.

The Allstate Corporation was started in April 1931 by insurance broker Carl L. Odell. He proposed the idea to Sears, Roebuck and Co. president and CEO Robert E. Wood. The idea for the company was to sell auto insurance by direct mail through the Sears catalog. Odell suggested that selling insurance by mail order could greatly reduce the costs by eliminating commissions paid to salesmen. The idea appealed to Mr. Wood, and he passed the proposal on to the Sears board of directors, whose members were also intrigued by the concept and the Allstate company was born. You are probably very aware of what happened in 1929; the Stock Market crashed and then during the first 10 months of 1930, 744 US banks failed (All in all, 9,000 banks failed during the 1930s) and it set off the Great Depression that lasted until 1940 when the US entered WWII. Allstate went on to become the second largest insurance co. in the country.

The great industrialist John D. Rockefeller said shortly after the crash of 1929 that “These are days when many are discouraged. In the 93 years of my life, depressions have come and gone. Prosperity has always returned and will again.”

SPOIO Inc. was started in December 2008. The economy is slow, companies are shutting down and the outlook is rosy. All you have to do is keep your head-up. All the advisers know that things will get better. They may disagree as to how long it will take, but it will happen eventually. Doing things like selling a large variety of items in a department store (I.E. an online department store), cell phone services, news & info, publishing, and making casual sporty clothing will always make money. Good economy or bad; people will need what they have to offer and a conglomerate will stand stronger than a co. that has only one product line —- just ask General Electric, which Forbes Magazine ranked as the world’s largest company in 2009. SPOIO Inc. wants to be the same type of survivor and innovator company. Time will tell.
